Well, it’s been 9 months since I’ve updated my blog. Terrible. A lot has happened so here’s an update on what the better part of 2012 looked like for me…
Last June I was lucky enough to play Vernon Gersch in They’re Playing Our Song at The Showboat Theatre Festival in Port Colborne, ON. After not being on stage in over a year this two person show was a real challenge. I loved every second it of.
Leah Oster played Sonia Walsk. Leah’s a beautiful actress with a voice that should be selling out Carnegie Hall. The production got rave reviews and we had a blast performing it. The only bad part of the show was that the run was a mere month. Thanks to everyone in Port Colborne for the warm hospitality.
Sadly, The Showboat Festival folded a few months after our run. After 26 years of entertaining audiences in Southern Ontario the festival’s board of directors felt continuing to run the theatre was too risky in today’s economy and they took the bold step to close the theatres doors. It was a sad day for Port Colborne, and theatre in Canada.
Last summer was pretty slow moving in this little actor’s career. On the plus side it gave me a lot of free time to play with my baby boy and his Mummy. We even took a trip out west and decided to get married on the shores of the Pacific ocean. Our wedding was a quiet elopement with a couple of friends who served as witnesses and of course our son. We surprised a lot of folks, but were glad to finally, officially be husband and wife.
In September Life With Boys began filming season 2. I was delighted to return as the show’s acting coach and my character, Mr Bennett even made a couple of appearances this season as well. The show starts airing in the United States this February. Hopefully, we’ll get green lit for a third season. We should find out soon. Fingers crossed.
We wrapped up the 18 new episodes of season 2 in early December. Check your local listings for when LWB airs in your hometown. We’re seen all over the world. 🙂
The episode of Copper I shot last March aired in September. The show looks great and a lot of friends of mine are in Season 1. Season 2 begins shooting soon. Hopefully my Butcher character, Hans, returns in season 2 (though I’m not holding my breath). I’m just proud to be a part of the show.
I was lucky enough to shoot an episode of another BBC America show this past Fall. OrphanBlack will begin airing this March. I’m in about 10 seconds of episode 3. Good Times.
2012 has been an exciting year thus far both personally and professionally.
First and foremost, Tanya and I welcomed our son, Nicholas into the world this past January. He’s a gorgeous baby boy and he’s enriched our lives in ways we cannot begin to describe. He puts life into perspective and I love him and his amazing mother in ways that make words useless.
Professionally speaking the year started off with lots of auditions and not much pay off. Thankfully the dry spell ended recently with a few bookings.
I recently recorded a radio commercial for “Shaw” media and a TV commercial for “Telus“. Good Times.
In March I shot an episode for a new BBC America show called Copper. Copper is set in the Five Points are of New York City in 1864 (about 9 months after the famous Draft Riots). In this particular episode I play a Bavarian Butcher called Hans Elek. The show will start airing this summer on BBC America and, I think, Showcase up here in Canada. More information to come as I find it out.
This June I’ll be appearing in Showboat Theatre Festival (Port Colbourne, ON)’s production of They’re Playing Our Song. The show is a two person musical about a composer (Vernon Gersch ~ played by me) and a young female lyricist who begin working together. Wouldn’t you know… they fall in love…
It’s been just over a year and a half since I last appeared on stage and I’m looking forward to getting back at it with this show. Thom Currie, the Artistic Director at Showboat is staging the show in “the round” which will make it very fun… especially since I’m playing a pianist and I don’t play a note… You gotta love a challenge. I’m not sure who is playing the female lead. More news to follow. You can look up showtimes and ticket prices at http://www.showboattheatre.ca. I hope to see you there!!!
Staying in the world of television, I’m delighted to say that Life With Boys was picked up in the US market by Nickolodeon and will begin shooting a second season this coming fall. I am hoping to return as the show’s acting coach. Still no word yet if Mr. Bennett will return in season 2. Fingers are crossed.
I just got word that My Babysitter’s a Vampire‘s second season has just finished the editing process. The editor and co-producer, Ellen Fine just e-mailed me this screen shot from the show. During filming of the finale episode in season 2 we found ourselves one adult background performer short. It was a classroom shot and there was no teacher to be found. I mentioned to the director, Farhad Mann, that I am a card carrying ACTRA member and he told me to report to wardrobe immediately. So, I do appear in the show for a brief second or two but there’s no dialogue or much action for me. I haven’t done background work since 2001. Here’s the screen shot. 🙂
That’s pretty much all the news for now.
I’m a Dad. I’m a working actor. I’m living the Dream!!!
Oh, speaking of Living the Dream… kudos to the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway. This show started last year at The Stratford Shakespeare Company and was such a hit that it went to the Great White Way via The LaJolla Playhouse in California. I have many great friends in the show who have just made their Broadway debut. Congratulations to you all.
If you’re in Australia this year, check out Ben Mingay starring in a new musical version of An Officer and a Gentleman. The show will tour Oz and then who knows where it’ll go. Here’s a preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuNsmlrk3WY (that’s Ben singing an original song from the show).
Well, 2011 is almost done! I don’t know about you, but I think that was one of the fastest years I’ve ever experienced. A lot happened here at tylermurree.com land. Let’s review…
After spending the better part of 2009-2010 touring across North America with The Lion King I felt like I needed a wee break from an 8 show/week theatre schedule. I decided that 2011 was the year I was really going to concentrate on working more in the land of film/tv. Well, that bet payed off.
From February – May I worked as the on-set acting coach for the YTV sitcom “Life With Boys“. The show airs several times/week on YTV here in Canada and will debut on Nickelodeon in the States in 2012. It’s also airing (or scheduled to air) in 180 countries world wide. Aside from being the acting coach for the 22 episodes I also appear in 3 of them as Mr Bennett, the nerdy math teacher at the kids’ school.
We’re still waiting to hear if a second season has been given the go ahead. I certainly hope it does. The cast of this show is fantastic and the gig is certainly a sweet one.
After Life With Boys I had a pretty slow summer. I shot a very short lived commercial for RBC Visa and an episode of the MTV show Scare Tactics with my friend Melanie Orr who directed the episode. That was a trip.
This September-November I worked, again as an acting coach, on the set of Fresh TV/Disney Channel’s My Babysitter’s a Vampire. This was an entirely different experience from my earlier one on Life With Boys. The shooting styles on both shows is very different and Vampire only shot 13 episodes as opposed to LWB‘s 22. That said, I had a great time working with the cast and crew. Sadly I won’t be appearing in MBaV but I’m proud to have worked on it.
So, that’s pretty much it, in a nutshell. I’ve certainly learned a lot from my time on set; both behind, and in front of, the camera. I’m glad I took that break from live performing and now I’m ready to go back to it.
Here’s hoping that 2012 is full of lots of opportunities. On Stage. On screen. In the recording booth. Behind the camera… the sky’s the limit.
And of course, Tan and I are expecting our little one in February. Crazy Good Times!!!
Happy Holidays from www.tylermurree.com!!!
I am pleased to announce a changing of the guard… Actually, a few “changing of the guards” need be reported…
First off, I am pleased to announce that I have a new agent. Shari Quallenberg at Artist Management Inc. (AMI) is now representing me. For the last 20 years Shari has distinguished herself as one of the country’s most respected agents representing talent working across the board in Film, Television and live Theatre. Shari has been a contributor, providing insight for young people in media as well as being a regular panelist for ACTRA’s young talent conferences.
I am delighted to be joining AMI and look forward to this next chapter in my career. Shari can be contacted via my “Contacts” page.
I do want to take a moment and thank my former representation, Newton Landry Management, for guiding me, and my career, through the last 8 years. With them I joined CAEA/ACTRA and AEA. They helped me secure contracts with Mirvish Productions, Disney, CBC and many others. I will always remember my first agents with fondness. Thank you Sandie and Yanick.
Secondly, www.tylermurree.com has a new Webmaster. In 2003 my brother-in-law, Iain, started this site as a birthday present to me. Since then he has served as my Webmaster and helped me chronicle my career. Alas, Iain has projects of his own and has passed the reins on to my very good friend and former cast/dressing-room mate, David Piggott. David is a renaissance man He’s an actor/singer/host/photographer/web-designer. Dave has helped retool, re-imagine and maintain tm.com and I’m grateful to him for doing such a fine job. Dave is based in Orlando, FL and can be contacted via his own website: www.davidpiggott.com. It should also be noted that Dave is the guy who is responsible for my switching over to MAC. Thanks Dave, I’ll never be a PC again.
Last, but certainly not least, there is one more major event to share: my better half, the ever gorgeous, Tanya Dobler, and I would like to announce that we are expecting a wee little Murree baby. Our bundle of joy is due tin early 2012. We are excitedly preparing for parenthood. Who knows, perhaps we’ll have a dancer like Mommy or an actor like Daddy. Or… we could bring a normal person into this world; fancy that. Either way, we’re delighted to announce this news to the world.
Stay tuned for more news in the coming weeks at www.tylermurree.com.
